BOSTON (AP) — In a Nov. 14 story about a stage production that was canceled at Brandeis University, The Associated Press reported erroneously that the performance was postponed from the fall to the spring. While the production was initially postponed, the playwright later decided to have it premiered elsewhere. It will not be performed at Brandeis this spring.

A corrected version of the story is below:

University says Lenny Bruce play was pulled by playwright

Brandeis University says it didn't make the call to cancel a stage play about the late comedian Lenny Bruce after some students and alumni alleged it contains racist language and themes

BOSTON (AP) — Brandeis University says it didn't make the call to cancel a stage play about the late comedian Lenny Bruce after some students and alumni alleged it contains racist language and themes.

The Boston-area university said Tuesday in a letter to the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education that the play was initially postponed until spring but was pulled by the playwright in October to be premiered elsewhere.

The Philadelphia-based nonprofit had raised concerns over the play's cancellation in an open letter to the university, saying the university should defend the free-speech principles Bruce fought for. The letter was signed by Bruce's daughter.

Bruce was known for profanity-laced routines that sparked several arrests for obscenity in the 1960s. An archive of his work is housed at Brandeis.

The university says it maintains its commitment to "freedom of expression."
