Soothe Dry Winter Skin: 4 Proven Ways to Glow Again

Your skin is begging you to make these moisturizing moves.
By - HealthiNation

Wahh, I’m flakey! I’m itchy! I’m PARCHED. What the heck is that whining and complaining?! Oh, that’s your dry winter skin—and it’s begging for some love.

During winter the humidity level drops, causing the air to become cold and dry. This causes the moisture in your skin to evaporate more quickly, which dries it out and can make it flakey, itchy, or even bleed. Dry skin may also make fine lines and wrinkles more noticeable. (Great.)

Your skin is your largest organ and should be treated with TLC—especially during the colder months. If your skin could talk, here’s how it would tell you to take care of it this winter—so you can look and feel your best.

1. Time it right.

Caring for your skin is not just about how you do it, but also when. To seal in all that delicious H2O, moisturize within a few minutes of showering or washing your hands or face. If you shave in the shower, save it until the end when hair is soft to prevent dryness and irritation. Here are more tips for showering with eczema and other dry-skin conditions.

2. Switch up your products.

Ditch your razor after five to seven shaves; a dull blade can bother dry skin (and increase your chances of cutting yourself!). Use gentle skin products that are free of fragrances, alcohol, retinoids, or alpha-hydroxy acid—these ingredients can dry out your dermis. When choosing a moisturizer, skip the lotion (they can often be irritating and less effective) and opt for ointment or creams with olive oil, jojoba oil, or shea butter instead. Check out a derm’s tips for picking the perfect moisturizer.

3. Wash less.

Unless you’re stinkin’ up your workplace, try to wash as least often as possible during the winter to avoid dry skin. Washing too frequently can strip your skin and hair of its natural moisturizing oils. Wash the day off your face at night only (you can get away with just a splash with cool water in the A.M.) Shower no more than once a day, and keep it short; less than 10 minutes. If you can manage it, wash your hair every two to three days. Learn more about an ideal shower routine for dry skin here.

4. Keep your environment moist.

You can’t control the weather outside, but you can inside. Keep the air in your home moist by using a humidifier. When showering, do so with the door closed to lock in the steam so it can seep into your skin.

With these tips, your skin will be so bright, you’ll forget it’s winter.
