Childish Gambino is being sued for copyright infringement over his Grammy-winning song ‘This Is America’.
Kidd Wes claims that the song copies his track ‘Made In America’, which was released two years earlier.
Wes believes that the songs share a “distinct and unique vocal cadence, delivery, rhythm, timing [and] phrasing”.
A musicologist hired by Wes to compare the two songs has said that the similarities are “likely not coincidences”.
In 2019, ‘This Is America’ made history by becoming the first rap song to win Song of the Year at the Grammy Awards.
The powerful song discusses police brutality, racial inequality and gun violence.
Wes is demanding a trial and is seeking damages, including lost profits and opportunities.
The case also mentions Gabino’s record label RCA, Roc Nation and rapper Young Thug, who did backing vocals on the song.
