FIFA has announced that any players playing in the proposed European Super League will be banned from competitions.
The bans would stretch to the various regional club competitions such as the Champions League or Europa League.
Any club or player involved in such a competition would as a consequence not be allowed to participate in any competition organized by FIFA or their respective confederation, FIFA.
Rumors of a breakaway Super League featuring the best teams in Europe have been swirling for years.
In years past the discussion had died down following concessions made to the big clubs by their confederations.
But this time FIFA and the confederations appear to have gone on the offensive.
In October now-former Barcelona club president Josep Maria Bartomeu claimed he had signed the team up to the league.
Although not all clubs are for the change, the Bayern Munich chief executive has said they would deny an invitation.
