According to newly declassified documents, Bill Clinton rejected Queen Elizabeth's invitation to tea at the palace.
The former US President visited the UK for a day in 1997 to meet with the then newly elected Prime Minister Tony Blair.
Buckingham Palace wrote to Blair's staff to say that the queen "would be very pleased" to invite the Clinton's to tea.
A note in response to this said that Clinton instead wanted to "be a tourist" and had expressed interest in trying Indian food.
Blair's private secretary then said that the Clintons wished to politely decline the offer.
The Clintons also declined Blair's offer to have dinner at his country home.
According to The Guardian, the Clintons ended up having dinner with the Blairs at a French restaurant.
