Streaming platform Twitch has apologized after being criticized online for using the term “womxn” instead of women.
Twitch decided to start using the term “womxn” instead of women in an effort to be more general neutral.
In a now-deleted tweet, Twitch said “join us in celebrating and supporting all the Womxn creating their own worlds...”.
Social media users have said that the term is transphobic, as it suggests that transgender women are not women.
The company was quick to issue an apology saying that it “will be using the spelling “women” moving forward”.
Twitch said it will continue to work with the LGBTQ+ community and is committed to ensuring the platform is “inclusive to all”.
We're still learning. Our good intentions don't always equate to positive impact, Twitch wrote on Twitter.
