Leprosy Found In Wild Chimpanzees For The First Time

Provided By - Video Elephant on October 15, 2021
Leprosy has been discovered in wild chimpanzees in Guinea-Bissau and the Ivory Coast. This is the first time that leprosy has been found in non-human species in Africa. Leprosy can damage the respiratory tract, nerves and skin and cause lesions, nodules and loss of sensation in the limbs. While studying the behavior of chimpanzees scientists came across 4 chimps with “severe leprosy-like lesions”. It’s unclear exactly how the chimps became infected with the disease. however, scientists believe they came into contact with humans or “other unknown environmental sources”. Treatment for leprosy in chimps could be challenging as administering antibiotics to wild animals is very difficult. Leprosy has previously been seen in red squirrels in the UK and armadillos in the Americas.
