Organizers of the Olympics say that they and their event partners are committed to the games going ahead this year.
The statement comes after reports that the Japanese government had decided in private to cancel the Tokyo games.
The 2020 games are meant to start in July but doubts have been raised over the possibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Olympics were meant to take place last year but the event was postponed due to the pandemic.
A spokesperson for the Japanese government has also said that a decision will have to be made soon on the games.
At some point in time, we will naturally make a decision as to whether to actually hold it. Until then the Japanese government will do what it needs to do and make progress and prepare for it, Deputy Government Spokesman, Manabu Sakai.
Polls in Japan show around 80% of Japanese people oppose hosting the event this year.
