Study Finds Only 3% Of Earth’s Ecosystems Remain Intact

Provided By - Video Elephant on April 15, 2021
New research has found that only 3% of the world’s land remains ecologically intact. There are few remaining areas on Earth with the same condition and animal species that were found there 500 years ago. The remaining areas of genuine wilderness are found in parts of the world such as the Amazon rainforest and the Sahara. Previous studies using satellite research had claimed that 20-40% of the Earth remained unaffected by humans. The new study says that areas such as forests can appear intact from above but from the ground are clearly damaged. Researchers say that it may be possible to increase the ecological intactness to 20% through conservation efforts. It might be possible to increase the ecological intact area back to up to 20% through the targeted reintroductions of species that have been lost in areas where human impact is still low, Dr. Andrew Plumptre. The research was published in the journal ‘Frontiers in Forests and Global Change’.
