Nearly half of all new gun buyers in the US are women, according to a new study.
The 2021 National Firearms Survey found that 3.5 million women became gun owners between January 2019 and April 2021.
In the same period, four million men became gun owners across the US.
Similar surveys have previously found that about 10% to 20% of gun owners were women.
The survey also revealed that gun buyers during the period were more racially diverse than in previous years.
55% percent of all new gun owners were white, while 21% were Black and 19% were Hispanic.
Researchers and gun store owners say various protests across the country have likely driven the demographic changes.
