Life On Earth To Be Wiped Out In A Billion Years

Researchers have discovered that life on Earth will be wiped out due to a lack of oxygen in just over one billion years.
The researchers used a biogeochemistry and climate model to examine the timescale of oxygen-rich conditions.
The researchers from Japan and the U.S. found that our oxygen-rich atmosphere will only last around 1.08 billion more years.
As the sun grows hotter, it will release more energy, which will cause carbon dioxide (CO2) levels to drop.
As CO2 levels drop, plants will begin to die, lowering the levels of oxygen produced and causing a mass extinction of life.
The researchers expect oxygen levels to deplete before the loss of surface water on Earth, which will happen in 7 billion years.
The study was published in Nature Geoscience.
