While responding to backlash about her role as a judge on the CBS show The Activist, Julianne Hough apologized for her 2013 blackface incident.
The Activist is a show that will see activists compete in tasks that will “bring meaningful change” to education, health or the environment.
Hough was recently announced as a judge on the show alongside Usher and Priyanka Chopra.
In an Instagram post, Hough said that she does not claim to be an activist and agrees that she is not qualified to be a judge on the show.
She also apologized for wearing blackface in 2013 when she dressed as the Orange is the New Black character Suzanne Warren.
Wearing blackface was a poor choice based on my white privilege and white body bias that hurt people and is something that I regret doing to this day, Julianne Hough.
Hough went on to acknowledge that some fans believe The Activist is “performative, promoted pseudo-activism over real activism”.
