Country songwriter Bill Owens has died at the age of 85.
Owens is the uncle of Dolly Parton, having helped the singer start her career in music.
Parton took to Instagram to write a tribute to her uncle, claiming that she wouldn’t be here today “if he hadn’t been there”.
The singer told fans that in the very early stages of her career Owens encouraged her to keep singing and playing guitar.
He was there to help build my confidence standing on stage where he was always standing behind me or close beside me with his big ol’ red Gretsch guitar, Dolly Parton.
Owens wrote songs that were recorded by the likes of Loretta Lynn, Porter Wagoner, Ricky Skaggs and Kris Kristofferson.
According to Parton, her uncle was a “funny, friendly and generous” person.
