France is set to offer the owners of combustion engine cars a €2,500 grant to buy an electric bike.
The country will offer car owners the grant in exchange for trading in their old fossil fuel-powered vehicles.
The measure has been approved in a preliminary vote by french lawmakers in the National Assembly.
The measure is an amendment to a draft climate bill that aims to reduce France's greenhouse emissions by 40% by 2030.
For the first time it is recognized that the solution is not to make cars greener, but simply to reduce their number, Olivier Schneider Of The FUB.
The program follows similar schemes in countries such as Finland who also have rebates towards electric vehicles.
At €2,500 France’s rebate is quite high and could even see users get a new e-bike for no additional cost.
