NHL Referee Tim Peel has been banned after he admitted to giving a foul he knew wasn't a foul in order to favor a team.
The incident happened during a game between the Nashville Predators and the Detroit Red Wings on March 23.
Peel called a foul and was then heard on the hot mic saying “he wanted” to give the penalty against Nashville.
There is no justification for his comments, no matter the context or his intention, and the National Hockey League will take any and all steps necessary to protect the integrity of our game, NHL Vice President of Hockey Operations, Colin Campbell.
The 54-year-old has refereed over 1,300 NHL games and was due to retire at the end of the season.
Fortunately, the decision went on to have no consequences, as the Nashville Predators won the game 2-0.
