Dogs Know When People Are Lying

A new study has found that unlike human infants, dogs can tell when a person is being deceitful.
The researchers used 260 dogs in the study. The dogs that took part included border collies, terriers, retrievers and more.
The dogs were presented with two buckets, one of which contained dog food while the other was empty.
A person would establish trust with a dog by pointing to the food-filled bucket and allowing the dog to access it.
After this, the dogs witnessed another person moving the food from one bucket to another.
In the following experiments, the dogs relied on their own visual experience rather than the person’s pointing gestures.
The researchers say that dogs will not blindly follow misleading pointing gestures from humans.
Instead, they can adjust their behavior flexibly depending on the trustworthiness of the informant, Study Authors
