The UN Environment Programme’s Food Waste Index found that 923 million tonnes of food is being thrown away every year.
The report has highlighted a global issue that is “much bigger than previously estimated”.
The amount of food being wasted every year could fill 23 million 40-tonne trucks.
This would be enough trucks to circle the earth seven times.
COVID-19 lockdowns have helped to reduce food waste, as people are spending more time at home.
Planning and batch-cooking meals reduced people’s reported levels of food waste by 22% compared to 2019.
Food waste is responsible for 8-10% of greenhouse gas emissions.
Experts are pushing for countries to commit to halving their waste by 2030.
An estimated 690 million people were affected by hunger in 2019, this figure is expected to increase due to the pandemic.
