Eight Asiatic lions have tested positive for COVID-19 at a zoo in the Indian city of Hyderabad.
Four males and four females have reportedly contracted an older variant of the virus at the Nehru Zoological Park.
The zoo says that the eight lions have been isolated and are receiving the necessary treatment.
This is the first reported case of lions in India testing positive for COVID-19.
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has decided to close the zoo to visitors to reduce contact.
The ministry says that there is no evidence of animals transmitting the disease to humans any further.
Based on experience with zoo animals elsewhere in the world that have experienced SARS-COV2 positive last year, there is no factual evidence that animals can transmit the disease to humans any further, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
India has reported over 20.2 million COVID-19 cases since the onset of the pandemic.
