A new study has found that cats might be “too socially inept” to know when they are being unkind to humans.
Researchers in Japan tested 36 cats by letting them choose who to take a treat from.
The cats could choose between someone they had seen either help or hinder their owner.
The cats’ owners were asked to struggle with opening a container before an actor came to help them open it.
This scenario was repeated a second time with a different actor, except this time they would refuse to help.
The study found that cats expressed no preference in who they then took a treat from.
Previous tests had found that dogs would avoid people who had refused to help their owner.
